Best cars for new parents with high safety and large boot space (2022)

Becoming a new parent is expensive, with the arrival of a newborn meaning a never-ending list of required purchases.

And a suitable baby-friendly car is likely to be right at the top of that list.

Wave goodbye to the two-seat sports car, top-down roadster or super-small city car you've been enjoying for years - what you now need is a capacious and safe vehicle that can transport your bundle of joy with the utmost ease and security.

Baby on board: AA Cars has revealed its eight top picks new parents can fit this sign into

When you become a parent, the speed and style of a car drops down the priority list.

Invariably, safety ratings, space and the overall value of a motor takes precedent when purchasing your next set of wheels.

Some of the most important things to look out for in a child-friendly car is a spacious boot, wide-opening rear doors so you can easily install a car seat, a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating, Isofix attachment points for a car seat and any extra features that makes life easier with a little one in the back.

James Fairclough, chief executive of AA Cars, says:'This doesn't mean you have to go for something that's predictable or uninspiring.'

We asked him to pick eight baby-friendly cars across a range of prices.

All models featured have a five-star Euro safety rating and have examples produced after 2015, which means they will have Isofix mounting points for child seats as standard.

And if a new car is too much of a financial stretch, we've also listed the second-hand values of examples current for sale on AA Cars.

The Karoq is Skoda's latest SUV. It might be compact but it offers more than enough space for a folded pushchair in the boot

Skoda Karoq

New (most recent model): £18,000 - £30,000

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £17,000 - £27,000

Skoda's new Karoq is stylish, practical, safe (five-stars in Euro NCAP tests in 2017) and surprisingly affordable.

The comfortable seats, spacious interior and large boot, which boasts 521 litres, make it perfect for a new family.

The wide opening rear doors means you can get children into car seats without any issue and there are a range of handy rear seat features that will make life a little easier.

These include a large box for gadgets and snacks between the front seats and foldable tables for small children to use in the back.

The i30 Tourer is a mid-size estate car with a cavernous 600-litre boot compartment

Hyundai i30 Tourer

New (most recent model): £17,405 - £25,905

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £7,279 - £21,995

The Hyundai i30 Tourer is deceptively spacious, economical and affordable.

It has a 602-litre boot - 1,650 litres with the rear seats folded down - which is great if you are transporting cots, pushchairs and other large baby items.

When it comes to safety, it's at the top of its game with an 84 per cent child occupant rating.

Every model also has built-in automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance and a front collision warning system to reduce the chances of a crash.

Vauxhall Crossland X

New (most recent model): £17,710 - £23,080

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £9,997 - £17,995

The Vauxhall Crossland Xhas been designed to maximise space, with excellent headroom in the back that makers installing a child seat - and then your child into it - easy.

Five stars in crash tests and an 84 per cent child occupancy rating means it's safe too.

On the road, the light steering makes the Crossland X easy to manoeuvre into parking spaces when you are nipping to the shops and its supportive seats makes it comfortable for long journeys.

With a boot that can hold 410 litres, and 520 litres when you opt for sliding rear seats, there is more than enough room for a pram or a pushchair.

The Superb is an enormous vehicle. A claim proved by the 625 litres of boot space. It's packed with smart features, too

Skoda Superb

New (most recent model): £22,130 - £32,660

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £6,795 - £26,000

If you are looking for something with space and value for money, you don't need to look much further than the Skoda Superb.

This car has 625-litre boot space and 1,760 litres with the rear seats folded down.

It is quiet and low to the ground so it's smoother and more efficient to drive than a hulking SUV.

In addition to a large boot, there is also plenty of other storage, including a spot for umbrellas in the door - which is great when you're trying to unload kids when it's bucketing down with rain.

The five-star NCAP rating is bolstered by an 86 per cent child occupant protection score.

The Mazda6 has the highest Euro NCAP child protection score of all the models featured here

Mazda 6

New (most recent model): From £23,195 - £33,585

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £6,495 - £19,995

The Mazda 6 has practicality in abundance, affordable running costs and comfort in its arsenal. In fact, there are few better cars for long journeys.

It has a generous boot (480 litres) and wide opening doors, which makes getting children in and out hassle free.

The 6 is tuned for handling rather than comfort, While a hard ride might not be good for keeping the keeps asleep on a bumpy road, you'll get them to nursery in no time.

It offers plenty of protection to your nippers, too - Euro NCAP gives it a 91 per cent child occupant protection rating.

The Touran MPV has 7 seats, so is ideal for those with more than one child. This usable VW also boasts more than 50 storage compartments in the cabin

VW Touran

New (most recent model): £24,045 - £30,035

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £8,250 - £25,500

A child-friendly car is one packed with storage space, and few get close to the VW Touran for this feature. Incredibly, the seven-seat MPV has over 40 cubby compartments to keep food, drink, toys and other baby bumf.

It was cleverly designed with ample leg room in the back making it difficult for small children to kick the back of the front seats on long journeys - which is irritating as well as distracting.

(Video) Skoda Superb 2021 review: the best value car in the world?

It also has an edge when it comes to boot space as when the third row of seats is folded away it can hold up to 927 litres, which is larger than most other vehicles.

When it was last crash tested by Euro NCAP, the safety group gave it a five-star rating and 89 per cent child occupant protection score.

The Volvo V60 is stylish and high quality. It's also super safer - as you'd expect from the Swedish car manufacturer

Volvo V60

New (most recent model): £32,410 - £38,270

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £6,294 - £27,750

If you're searching for safety then you need to look no further than a Volvo.

The Swedish brand has even resorted to announcing speed limiters for all its new cars from next year, meaningno Volvo registered from 2020 will be able to go over 112mph.

The Volvo V60 is the most comfortable and practical car on the range that doesn't burst your bank balance. And it's stylish too.

Quiet and smooth to drive, it is ideal for babies sleeping in the back.

It has a surprisingly spacious boot (529 litres) for such a sleek exterior and it also has the very latest safety gear that made a five-star crash rating a nailed-on certainty.

The Audi A6 is a top choice for those with a bit extra to splash on a child-friendly vehicle

Audi A6

New (most recent model): £38,640 - £42,000

Price of used car (all models post 2015 included): £10,177 - £39,990

The Audi A6 is for those new parents who want luxury as well as child-transporting practicality.

It's crammed with the latest tech, which might not be a priority for parents but should help to keep children entertained.

Despite the high price, the car is a great family model.

A large boot (530 litres) and spacious interior means you'll never be pushed for room, and a five-star Euro NCAP score gives peace of mind if the worst happens out on the road.
