10 of the best prams, buggies and pushchairs, according to parents (2022)

Prams, pushchairs, buggies and strollers –choosingthe perfect carrier to keep your little one secure and comfortable on the movecan be a daunting task. So, where to start?

Carriers for infants can be divided into three categories, and the first thing to know is that much depends on the age of the child.

Firstly, there's the classic lie-flat newborn pram. It's believed that newborns need to lie flat in a pram to help with lung development, breathing, and spinal development. A pram is very different in that respect to an upright pushchair or stroller, but lots of thebest and most adaptable prams and pushchairshave a 2-in-1 system that can be converted into a reclining seat for toddlers at a later date.

Then, there's the "travel system", which also includes a car seat and carrycot that can be clicked in and out of the pram or pushchair. These offer multiple functions in one, andmake it easier to transport sleeping babies without disturbing them too much. In 2018, an all-in-one travel system complete with a whole host of practical functions is likely to be the best option for busy parents.

Finally, there's the stroller, which tends to be smaller, lighter and easierto fold away and store. They're ideal for travel and are typically designed for toddlers, although increasingly you can find good ones suitable for newborns up. Typically, what parents consider to be the best buggy depends hugely on the age of the child.

Active parents might also be interested in looking at the new generation of running buggies, such as the Bugaboo Runner and the BOB Revolution Pro (£499.50, Amazon), and the Baby Jogger Summit (£375, Amazon).

Running with a buggyincreases your calorie burn by up to 20 per cent, and the mental health charity Mind lists walking or running with your baby jogger as one way to help prevent or overcome post-natal depression.

In any case, the sort of terrain you'll be tackling is an important consideration, too –some buggies may look sleek and stylish on the city streets, but might fare less well on a farm. Then, of course, there's the budget to think about.

Growing families might also want to consider a double buggy. If you're a parent with one smallchild but might have another child in the near future, the Bugaboo Donkey Mono (£1,099, John Lewis) later converts into a double buggy with the help of an extension set (£280, John Lewis), so it caters for every eventuality if you're a first-time parent.

Some high-end prams can cost more than £1,000 –but smart shoppers should also be able to find a decent buggy for as little as £50. Make sure you try it out before you buy:double check you can fold it up easily if needed, that it's a suitable or adjustable height, and that it has the specific features you need –for example, some prams, buggies and strollers may have much more storage than others. You might also benefit from a detachable carrycot, a light, portable cot with handles that can be attached to your pram or buggy.

We've asked real mums and dads, as well as some of themost influential parenting bloggers around, to recommend their favourites but, as always, let us know your favourites and feel free to share your own recommendations.

Here is our definitive list of the 10 best prams, buggies and pushchairs, according to parents:

1. Baby Jogger City Mini stroller

£319, Amazon

"Ourfavourite buggy hands down is the City Mini by Baby Jogger," reveal Tia and Laura, the Brighton-based mums behind creative craft, baking and parenting blog Little Button Diaries."It has a one hand quick fold so it's super easy to collapse and store. We also love the way it steers and it has a lovely light frame. There’s a large basket space underneath to store all the mountains of toddler rubbish you need to haul round with you too."

Another mum we spoke to added: "It offers easy pushing, gliding even with a coffee in one hand and a phone in the other. It works on the street and off-road. The sunshade is generous and it works for both little and bigger kids. It's still going strong for my hefty three-year-old. The brake is operated with a handle, so flip flops aren't a problem.

"I found it easier to get over the gap to get on the train with it, because it's long. It does up a lot of space on the bus, but I still manage to take London buses fine. The only downside is that it's forward facing, except when you use the carry cot for little babies - but that wasn't a major issue for us, as our son loved looking out."

The City Mini is suitable from birth, lightweight and has a retractable weather cover with anSPF 50+ hood canopy. It converts into a travel system (just choose the car seat adapter that matches your car seat), and is widely regarded as one of the best baby strollers on the market. The car seat adapter and carrycots are sold separately.

2. Uppababy Cruz V2 pushchair

£679.99, Mamas and Papas

Jonny Cooper, Telegraph Men's commissioning editor, says theUppababy Cruz 2017 has served his two children well. He recommends getting the carrycot add-on if you can stretch that far, as it issuitable for overnight sleeping and comes supplied with a ventilated base and mattress. You can also buy a carrycot stand, which effectively turns it into a Moses basket."Our newborn lays flat in the bassinet, so he can sleep in it overnight anywhere. It stops you shelling out for a travel cot.

"For the price, the pram has all the practicalfeatures we need - a rain cover, shopping basket, UV sun shade, insect net - and it folds down easily (although it does take up a lot of boot space). There's an adjustable seat that can be used from six months facing either towards youor outwards.

"I'm also a fan of the buggy-board attachment, which helps to usher dawdling toddlers along (my two-year-old has taken to calling it his 'skateboard').

Amum we spoke to added: "The Cruz is narrow, so it's great for city strolling, squeezing into small cafes and through narrow front doors in terraced houses. The basket for shopping is massive and the handle bar height adjusts easily."

Ben Hillman, TV presenter and father, agrees: "For me the Uppababy Vista ishands down the most stylish, adaptable and practical system on the market. It has the largest undercarriage of all the buggies we’ve tried and can accommodate two children in numerous configurations such as a bassinet and seat, two seats, or a seat and a buggyboard. You can also buy a travel bag for it that insures the pram for any damage during transit."

3. Good BabyPockit+ stroller

From £179.95, Bournemouth Baby Centre

"We are huge fans of the Good BabyPockit+ stroller," says Gregory Stanton, AKA The London Dad. "It has all of the benefitsof a regular buggy but can fold down to next to nothing and fit into my backpack when we are on days out. Thatversatility fits our lifestyle. I'malways walking around museums. The only downside is that there isn't too much support for when they are tiny but then it's not aimed at the new born market. We have a pair of them that sit in the boot of the car ready for whenever we leave the house."

This is a stroller for the light traveller. Ben Hillman, Place in the Sun presenter and father of two, agrees. "It's an engineering wonder and the world's smallest folding buggy," he says. "Itfolds down to an incredible 35cm x 18cm x 30cm. It is small enough to fit in your hand luggage and be stowed in the overhead locker in a plane - it'sperfect for short breaks."

4. Quantum multi-mode travel stroller by Diono

£370, Amazon

Ellie Thompson, editor of My Baba, recommends the new Quantum multi-mode travel stroller by Diono. "This 6-mode travel system is a smart purchase for new parents," she says. "It’s 3-in-1 smart seat means it’s suitable from birth without having extra seat parts to store. The Quantum’s flat bassinet with luxury mattress and reversible seat liner converts to an upright toddler seat orpushchair mode in an easy transition. The Quantum is perfect for all seasons and all terrains. There's fourtiers of shade with its extra large eclipse hood – probably the largest you’ll find on any stroller on the market. There’s also a generous basket for your changing bag, which is one of my must-haves when looking at buggy purchases. There’s a unique one-step brake that’s simple to operate, which meansthe end to shoe scuffing. The stroller can be folded single-handedly and Quantum’s nesting design means it’s perfect for compact storage, so you’re not falling over baby kit in your hallway.

"I love that the Quantum’s adaptors make the chassis compatible with any car seat, so you have the freedom to make a separate purchase to accompany your stroller. The only thing I might change about this stroller is the height of the seat. That said, a lower positioning is fairly standard on most buggies.

As my nine-month-old grows into a toddler, I think I will understand more the advantage of having a lower positioned seat, so the jury is still out on this part!

The Quantum by Diono is an affordable purchase at £370 and it doesn’t compromise on quality. It also looks the business, and is available in black, navy, teal or red."

6. Bugaboo Fox pushchair

£995, Bugaboo

Plenty of mums recommend a stylish Bugaboo, particularlyfor newborns. The Bugaboo Fox is the latest multi-terrain compact pushchair with compact fold from Bugaboo. "I like the Bugaboo because you can have the baby looking at you when you push it, and it's comfortable to push. The Maxi Cosi car seat clicks in and out of it very easily," said one parent.

"The Bugaboo Bee (£645, Mamas and Papas) has been our go-to pram through the years, right from birth to the age of 4," adds Stephanie Withers, founder of Chalk Kids. "It’s small enough to fit in the smallest of car boots and is nice and light making it easy to travel with. It comes in a variety of colour options and has some useful accessories, a couple of our favourites being the cosy footmuff and the buggy board for any older siblings to hitch a ride on. However, the downside to this pram is that it’s really built for smooth pavements; the moment it hits some cobbles or uneven surfaces it will start to struggle, which can be frustrating at times to navigate. If you’re dealing with a lot of different terrains then the Bugaboo Cameleon (£675, Mamas and Papas) with its bigger wheels is a great alternative, it’s roomier and has all the same great features."

7.Silver Cross CoastFully Adjustable 2-in-1 Baby Pram and Pushchair

£1235, Silver Cross Baby

This pushchair was easy to use and handled pavements and fields with ease."

"If you need a small buggy, you may need to think about something else as this isn't the smallest on the market. It is, however, very hard wearing and tough. You can find a review on my blog."

Though the Silver Cross Surf All Terrain has been discontinued, the Silver Cross Coast and its puncture-proof tyres offer a new and improved version of Adam's favourite.
